Fantasmagórica was a webseries I co-created and co-directed with Juan Flahn and Mista Louis. Ten episodes of cómico-terrorífico-giallo-costumbrista — which is a very Spanish way of saying: horror-comedy with a giallo aesthetic and a very particular eye for the absurd rhythms of everyday life. We crowdfunded it on Verkami, filmed it with a lot of love and very little sleep, and somehow convinced an amazing cast to join us.
Mariola Fuentes played Marga, the lead — carrying the whole series on her shoulders across all ten episodes with the kind of comic timing that makes everything look effortless. Roberto Correcher was Salvador, her co-anchor through the chaos, also the full run. Resu Morales brought Doña Pura to life in all ten episodes — a character whose name alone should tell you everything. Richard Sahagún played Luis across seven episodes, before going on to things like El ministerio del tiempo and Patria. La Prohibida appeared as Rosa across four episodes, Psicosis González as Luis’s mother. Leire García was Eva, Fanny Condado played the mother of Clara, Emilio Gavira gave us Javierín. Teresa del Olmo and Jorge Granda came in for two episodes each, as did Lara Sajen, Luis Miguel Seguí, and Antonia San Juan as Clara. Mercuriales Serrón, Joan Carles Suau, and Ángel Burgos rounded out the cast with one episode each.
It won the Jury Award at the Amets Film Festival in 2015. Not bad for a webserie made against the tide.
