Dulces Pesadillas

Dulces Pesadillas is a webseries I created, wrote, directed, edited and post-produced, launched in October 2015 on YouTube. The premise is deceptively simple: La Bruja Kika, played by Kika Lorace, hosts a show from her cave in which she reviews and celebrates the most gloriously terrible films ever made — B-movies, exploitation cinema, cult trash and genre oddities that the history books forgot or deliberately ignored. Each episode is dedicated to a specific film, framed by original sketches with the characters, and accompanied by the irreplaceable voice of La Araña Berta, the living embodiment of destructive criticism.

The series was born out of a genuine love for the kind of cinema that doesn’t apologise for itself: titles like Vegas in SpaceFrankenhooker, Las luchadoras contra la momia, XtroI Bought a Vampire Motorcycle or Curse of the Crimson Altar, among many others. Films that were never going to get a retrospective at the Filmoteca, but that deserved someone to stand up and make the case for them — with a broomstick in hand, from inside a cave, in full drag.

Kika Lorace was at the time the most viral drag queen in Spain, having already racked up over a million views with Adiós Botella. Putting her in a horror-comedy hosting format felt completely natural — she has the kind of instinct for comic timing and character commitment that the genre demands. Resu Morales gave Berta a voice that could curdle milk.

The series aired weekly and ran for thirteen episodes across its first season. It was written entirely in-house, with occasional script contributions from Manuel Gay Moreno, Fernando Polanco and Carlos J. Martin, and produced with the same obsessive attention to tone that makes or breaks this kind of project. Getting the balance right between genuine affection for the source material and the comedy of watching someone absolutely eviscerate it is harder than it looks.
