In October 2016, I filmed the promotional interview for ¡Digo! Ni puta ni santa. Las memorias de La Veneno— the memoir by Cristina Ortiz Rodríguez, the transgender vedette, actress and media personality who had become a cult icon in Spain after her breakout on Esta noche cruzamos el Mississippi in the nineties. The book, written with Valeria Vegas, was her own account of her life: raw, funny, unfiltered, entirely her.
The interview was shot just weeks before she passed away in November 2016, at 52. What started as a promotional piece ended up being one of the last recorded conversations with her — which gives it a weight neither of us could have anticipated when we sat down to film it. Four years later, Los Javis adapted the memoir into Veneno, the Atresplayer series that introduced her story to an entirely new generation.
